Update: Our blog has a new article on this incredible ingredient. The best place to read about it is the new Tongkat Ali write-up, which discusses everything you need to know.
Eurycoma longifolia, also known as the extract tongkat ali, has made news in the bodybuilding industry for its effects on testosterone, cortisol, and sexual health. Eurycoma longifolia is a tall evergreen shrub that commonly grows in Southeast Asia. Locals that made tea from the slender tree believed that it improved sex drive. As a result, demand for shrub escalated its status to a "protected" species.
The following effects of supplemental tongkat ali have been noted in studies:
- Optimizes testosterone
- Reduces cortisol
- Potential aphrodisiac effects
In recent years, more research on tongkat ali and its effects on testosterone and libido have been done because of how promising animal studies have been. One study, conducted in 2012, looked at men suffering from late-onset hypogonadism (LOH) and prescribed 200mg of tongkat ali extract. After one month, study participants experienced significantly improved serum testosterone concentration.
A small pilot study, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, demonstrated that the extract --- 100mg per day -- increased fat-free mass, reduced body fat, and improved muscle strength and size. The study authors theorize that Eurycoma longifolia Jack may have a positive effect on physical performance and stamina.
Researchers tested the effects of Eurycoma longifolia on cortisol and testosterone levels during intense endurance workouts. Athletes who were given the supplement showed a 32.3% decrease in cortisol levels and 16.4% increase in testosterone levels. This study demonstrates that the supplement may produce a more anabolic state.
Cortisol has been linked to elevating obesity, high blood pressure, and hyperglycemia. High levels of cortisol can lead to the accumulation of circulating fat in the abdomen.
