Carbonated protein soda is one of the newer formats to come out of the RTD protein category in the mid 202s, and it's moving fast. The concept is straightforward: take a meaningful protein dose, skip the creamy shake texture, and put it in a fizzy, soda-style can that actually sounds appealing on a hot day.
Bucked Up helped bring this format into the mainstream with their Lightly Carbonated Protein drink, launched in early 2025 where it won awards for its innovation. Each 16oz can packs 25g of whey protein isolate, zero sugar, and 100 calories -- with a clear, fizzy texture that has nothing in common with a traditional chalky protein shake. Other brands have since followed, and the category is growing quickly.
The main draw here is convenience and palatability. If you've ever struggled to get another protein shake down, a cold carbonated protein soda is a different experience entirely. Formula-wise, most products in this space use whey isolate for its clarity and clean flavor profile in carbonated liquid.
