Glutamine for Muscle-Growth
As mentioned in the glutamine research studies, there are constant debates over whether Glutamine supports muscular development in bodybuilders. Many swear by it, but others do not. Several studies show that glutamine does not work for muscle growth or athletic performance:

• Glutamine supplementation during resistance training has no significant effect on muscle performance, body composition or muscle protein degradation in young healthy adults.
• The addition of glutamine to a carbohydrate + essential amino acid beverage shows that glutamine had no effect on post-exercise muscle glycogen resynthesis or muscle protein synthesis
• Although glutamine supplementation may increase plasma glutamine levels, its effect on enhancement of the immune system and prevention of adverse effects of the overtraining syndrome are equivocal.
• There were no differences in the average number of maximal repetitions performed in the leg press or bench press exercises among the 3 groups. These data indicate that the short-term ingestion of glutamine does not enhance weightlifting performance in resistance-trained men.
• Although glutamine stimulates muscle glycogen synthesis, its addition to carbohydrate supplements provides no additional benefit over ingestion of carbohydrate alone.

However, glutamine has been shown assist with immune function response for cancer patients as well as chronically ill patints and also help with intestinal issues: Glutamine and glutamine supplementation appear to be important for the normal maintenance of intestinal morphology and function, intestinal adaptation following resection, and prevention of clinical infection related to bacterial translocation.
