Everlasting life. The fountain of youth. A cure for aging. All throughout history there are examples of elixirs, healing waters and other mystical sources promising an extension of youth or longer lasting life. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what such ideas are – mythical stories. However, that doesn’t mean steps can’t be taken to extend our longevity, youthfulness and long-term health.
Among other causes of aging, such the shortening of our telomeres (a vital part of our DNA), studies have shown that reducing damage to organelles such as the cells mitochondria is a strong predictor of overall longevity. As the powerhouse of the cell and the structure responsible for converting food intake into usable chemical energy in the form of ATP, the health of your mitochondria is integral to optimal health and bodily function. In terms of bodybuilding, the optimized function and health of the body’s mitochondria may translate to more effective muscle growth, reduction of body fat, recovery time and overall athletic performance.
Core Lifeline’s LONGEVITY is designed to help keep your mitochondria functioning properly and protect against further damage through the inclusion of intensively researched ingredients such as Quercetin, BIONMN, and Puremidine, among others, at or above recommended dosages. Extend your health and performance today with LONGEVITY!
Quercetin Anhydrous 95%
Quercetin is often classified as a key flavonoid that is present in a wide variety of fruits and vegetables traditionally known for its high antioxidant and inflammation reducing properties. Recently however, quercetin has been shown to exhibit benefits outside of its free radical-scavenging properties. These newly seen benefits have put emphasis on quercetins ability to effect mitochondrial processes in vitro. These benefits have been seen through modulation of mitochondrial biogenesis pathways, mitochondrial membrane potential, oxidative respiration and ATP anabolism, and mitochondria induced apoptosis.
What are mitochondria?
Mitochondria are complex and multifunctional organelles engaged in almost all cellular processes. They are commonly referred to as the “powerhouse” of the cell due to their role in the breakdown of carbon-rich fuel molecules (glucose, lipids, glutamine) and in ATP synthesis via oxidative phosphorylation. So not only do mitochondria help turn energy we take in from food into useable cellular energy, they also play other vital roles in the human body to maintain proper function.
One in vivo study performed on rats’ response to quercetin administration over the course of 7 days looked at changes in mitochondrial biogenesis (formation of new mitochondria) in skeletal muscle and brain, and on endurance exercise tolerance. The markers accessed were mRNA expression of PGC-1alpha, and SIRT1, mtDNA, and cytochrome c concentration. Quercetin administration showed increases in all of these markers as well as were associated with an increase in both maximal endurance capacity and voluntary wheel-running activity. These benefits, along with more promising studies being conducted, show how effective quercetin supplementation can be in improving mitochondrial function and enhancing the human bodies overall performance. In addition to these performance benefits, mitochondrial biogenesis stimulation can play an important role as an adaptive mechanism in the response cells have to different stressors as well as provide a protective mechanism against a broad range of acute and chronic diseases that are often manifested by mitochondrial dysfunction.
BIONMN (Beta-Nicotinamide Mononucleotide)
Nicotinamide Mononucleotide (NMN), is a ribo-nucleotide, which is a simple structural unit of RNA. NMN is the direct precursor of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) and is considered a vital component to cellular increases in NAD+ levels. What is NAD+? NAD+ is an essential coenzyme that is required to produce ATP (adenosine triphosphate), or the fuel that is used by almost all of our body’s cells for functions. As we age, NAD+ levels naturally decline, which in turn can lead to less-than-optimal functioning and ultimately the onset of disorders like obesity, insulin resistance, and impaired cognitive function. While humans cannot absorb NAD directly, use of NAD+ precursors, like NMN, can prove to be beneficial for maintaining levels of NAD+. BioNMN, from NNB Nutrition, emphasizes enhanced bioavailability so that the full benefit of this ingredient is able to be achieved.
NMN supplementation has a wide range of benefits that has an influence on nearly all body system functions, from brain and cardiovascular improvements, suppression of age-related adipose tissue inflammation, neuroprotection, hormonal health, mitochondrial function, enhancing muscle endurance and strength, and longevity. Focusing on these benefits, all of these body systems need a coenzyme to facilitate the cascading effects leading to their benefits. In the context of improving muscle endurance and strength, our skeletal muscles require significant amounts of vital energy molecules in order to maintain their functionality, stability and strength. NAD+ is required in order to metabolize these molecules, thus our muscles can greatly benefit from a steady supply of its building blocks, such as NMN.
As mentioned before, mitochondria are essential cellular structures that act as the powerhouse of each cell. These organelles even have their own DNA. Mitochondria are critical for metabolism, meaning they work to convert molecules from food we consume into energy our bodies can utilize for function. NAD+ is at the root of this metabolism, meaning that without NAD+, mitochondria cannot metabolize thus leaving our cells without energy, and ultimately dying as a result. Studies have shown that through NMN supplementation, its role in increasing NAD+ production can protect mitochondria from dysfunction as well as maintain proper mitochondrial functioning by ensuring that metabolism is able to take place.
Where NMN rises to enhance longevity is that a lot of these bodily functions decrease with age. By ensuring that NAD+ levels are able to be maintained or supported through this aging process the hypothesized goal is to mitigate the normal aging process as much as possible to allow for optimal functioning of all body systems for a long period of time, whereas without optimal levels the risk of dysfunction and disease rises significantly.
Pro-GBB (Gamma Butyrobetaine Ethyl Ester HCL)
Core LifeLine’s LONGEVITY uses the trademarked form of Gamma Butyrobetaine Ethyl Ester HCL, or GBB for short, Pro-GBB. GBB is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the boosting of the non-essential amino acid L-carnitine. L-carnitine plays a key role in energy production by its ability to transport fatty acids into the cell’s mitochondria (‘energy producing powerhouse’) to be used for energy. Studies have shown that when GBB is present it can increase the bodies L-carnitine supply, thus providing enhanced benefits. So, in simplified terms, GBB increases usable L-carnitine in the body which increases the mitochondria’s ability to use fatty acids for energy. With the goal of reducing body fat or even improving performance, L-carnitine shows particular benefits in this field. A study conducted on mammals looked at the responses of L-carnitine supplementation on growth performance as well as circumference measurements. The results showed that weights of muscle tissue increased, whereas abdominal fat percentage decreased.
AstraGin (Astragalus membranaceous and Panax notoginseng) Root Extracts
AstraGin is a trademarked combination of Astragalus membranaceous and Panax notoginseng that has been widely used in the supplement manufacturing industry largely for due to its clinically studied benefits for improving absorption of nutrients, peptides, and amino acids. Some statistics include increased absorption of creatine, leucine, citrulline, and other peptides by up to 67%, increased curcumin absorption by 92%, increases polyunsaturated fatty acids (from flax and fish oil) by 58% and 100% respectively, as well as can increase ATP production in the liver by 18%. AstraGin has been shown capable of increasing muscle protein synthesis and increased mTOR through enhanced leucine absorption, which has an influence on improved glucose metabolism and mitochondrial functions. In addition to this benefit, AstraGin’s ability to enhance polyunsaturated fatty acid absorption while also inhibiting saturated fatty acid absorption, thus reducing the risk of impaired glucose metabolism and mitochondrial function, can enhance ATP synthesis through mitochondrial respiration, and increase oxidative phosphorylation.
It has been further studied how Astragalus and Panax notoginseng specifically can protect mitochondria and enhance their function towards anti-aging. The proposed mechanism leads to Astragalus acting as a free radical scavenger, which has the ability to inhibit mitochondrial permeability transition and increase the activity of antioxidants against the peroxidation of membrane lipids. Panax notoginseng also works in a similar fashion through decreased free radical production. This lipid peroxidation has been shown to be a major cause of decreases mitochondrial function. In addition to this, ensuring a highly permeable environment around the mitochondrial membrane is crucial for maintaining mitochondrial functions. This permeability allows for the passage of key electro chemicals to cross the gradient allowing for the process of energy development for the cells. These are just a few of the studied benefits that Astragalus and Panax notoginseng have on mitochondrial function but it paints a clear picture as to how they can influence energy metabolism and work to enhance protect mitochondrial functions, improve anti-aging activity, and enhance longevity.
Pyrroloquinoline Quinone (PQQ)
We know that having more mitochondria present and their health has an impact on overall health, energy levels, inflammation levels, oxidative stress, etc. Dysfunction of these mitochondria can play a role in numerous chronic diseases and other metabolic disorders. Pyrroloquinoline Quinone, also known as PQQ, is a powerful redox cofactor that can act as both a prooxidant and antioxidant that protects cells in the human body from oxidative damage by restoring redox balance. It also has been shown to support the metabolism of energy and healthy aging. Deficiency of PQQ has also been shown in animal studies to lead to reduction in number and size of mitochondria by upwards of 20%-20%. PQQ supplementation can increase mitochondrial biogenesis through a mechanism of action by activating proliferator-activated receptor-gamma-coactivator-1 alpha (PGC-1α) and 3',5'-cyclic adenosine monophosphate response element-binding protein (CREB). Studies conducted on animals have shown that PQQ supplementation stimulates this PGC-1α-mediated mitochondrial biogenesis through sirtuin 1 activity and may also activate 5’-adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK), which is another important regulator of mitochondrial biogenesis. While most studies on PQQ have been conducted on animals, human studies are showing promise as well. One randomized controlled trial conducted on men while also engaging in an endurance exercise program showed that while the two groups didn’t exhibit much of a difference in performance metrics, there was a significant increase in PGC-1α protein levels. This most likely relates to an increase in number of mitochondria present in the supplemented group. While exercise can indeed multiply mitochondria through biogenesis, PQQ supplementation can potentially work through mechanisms that build new mitochondria as well. When exercise becomes less frequent, and our ability to stimulate new mitochondria on our own stops, PQQ supplementation can be an essential tool for increasing longevity.
Puremidine (Spermidine Trihydrochloride)
It might be common knowledge but it is important to remember that efficient cellular functioning is essential to our overall health, wellness, and longevity. We often only discuss large variables, like training, macronutrients, sleep, etc. as being essential (which they are) that we tend to forget the importance of how our cellular building blocks and our internal playing field influence our overall well being and health and wellness goals. Improving bodily function at the cellular level first can prove more fruitful in some aspects as it involves addressing certain problems at the source or providing support where most issues usually begin.
Cells are involved in all of our bodies processes and functions. From metabolism, respiration, muscle growth, and organ function, our body is essentially controlled by cells and their actions. Now just like our daily obligations require us to be attentive, fit, and ready to take on tasks so does our body rely on these cells to physically capable of performing under the rigors that we put our bodies through. Our body utilizes several processes to ensure our cells are able to perform to their required capabilities. Apoptosis, or programmed cell death; necrosis, or premature death; and autophagy, or disposing of defunct cells (recycling). Spermidine, a polyamine, is thought to enhance this process of autophagy. This recycling of defunct cells allows them to then be used elsewhere in the body to maintain health. This defense mechanism has been shown to support the regression of metabolic disorders, neurodegenerative disorders, and signs of aging. This process does slow with age, so utilizing tools that can help maintain this recycling process can be essential at prolonging longevity. Spermidine can in fact be found in foods we consume. Mushrooms, broccoli, organ meats, apples, etc. are just a few but supplementation can also prove essential at keeping our spermidine levels elevated as we age and if these foods are not eaten in sufficient quantities on a day-to-day basis. Although clinical data on spermidine at this moment has been limited to in vitro tests or in mice, these tests do give some evidence to improved health variables related to aging in humans due to its impact at the cellular level on vital cell structures like mitochondria.
While we can’t stop ourselves or the essential components of our body from aging, we do have the ability to impact our lifespan in a positive way. Through living a lifestyle that promotes good overall health and well-being as well as utilizing tools, like Core LONGEVITY, that can fill in the gaps we lack as we age, can be a vital combination in improving overall cellular function as well as longevity on this earth.
