Does Waxy Maize Work?
As mentioned in the Carbohydrates/Sports Drinks/Energy Gels Studies, yes, carbohydrates work towards giving energy and replenishing spent glycogen during and after exercise.
Waxy maize-specific studies:
In a study of a high molecular-weight carbohydrate (waxy maize) vs. a lower molecular weight carbohydrate drink, mean glycogen synthesis rate was significantly higher during the initial 2 hours for the high molecular weight drink. Another study showed that a drink of 78% waxy maize empties from the stomach faster than that of an shorter-chain carbohydrate solution without potentiating increased circulating blood glucose or insulin levels.
So while waxy maize will, in fact, be absorbed more quickly out of your stomach and into your blood stream, will this have a major effect on muscular growth and energy if you are not doing a long-distance race or are done working out? A detailed study showed that a carbohydrate drink after exercise replenished more glycogen than a carbohydrate-protein-fat drink or placebo. A similar study showed that a carb/protein/fat drink replenished glycogen slightly more than just a carbohydrate drink.
