Healthy Hair Growth
Hair is the fastest growing tissue in the human body. The average rate of growth is about one-half inch a month. Hair growth is optimal from age 15 to 30, slows down from age 40 to 50, and is progressively lost by about age 50. Typical hair loss ranges from 50 to 100 scalp hairs each day.Healthy hair growth consists of three phases:
Anagen phase - Hair follicles enter an active growing period lasting about 2 to 6 years. Up to 95% of healthy hair follicles are in this phase at any given time.
Catagen phase - The anagen phase is followed by a 1 to 3 week period of declining growth.
Telogen phase - The catagen phase is followed by a temporary resting period, which typically lasts 3 to 4 months. After which the hair is then shed and the follicle begins pushing a new hair to the surface.
An Overview of Hair Loss
Hair loss in both men and women is marked by a progressive miniaturization of hair follicles, causing a shortening of the hair growth cycle. As the growth phase shortens, the hair becomes thinner and shorter, to the point where there is no growth at all. Hair loss or hair thinning is most commonly associated with aging or hereditary, but can also be attributed to stress, changes in immune health, nutritional deficiencies, and other causes. Because hereditary hair loss is gradual, the sooner supplementation is started, the better the chances of slowing or halting the hair loss process.*
Hair Loss in Men
Men have a 50% chance of experiencing pattern hair loss by their 50th birthday. However, many men lose hair to some degree by age 35. This hereditary condition, clinically termed androgenetic alopecia, is characterized by a receding hairline, as well as a loss of hair on top of the scalp. While going bald isn’t life threatening to men, it can be life altering.
Research indicates that one of the primary causes of age-related hair loss is DHT (dihydrotestosterone), the “bad” form of the hormone testosterone. As men age, the level of DHT tends to increase. This bad form of testosterone fits perfectly onto a receptor site on the follicle causing the hair to shorten its normal growth phase. In other words, DHT tends to inhibit the growth of scalp hair. In most men, the hairs in the front of the scalp are more sensitive to DHT, causing men to lose their hair in a distinct pattern, starting with a receding hairline, often coupled with a growing bald spot on top of the head.
Hair Loss in Women
Women also suffer from hair loss, although not as prominently as men. The condition occurs in up to 25% of pre- menopausal women and approximately 40% of post-menopausal women. While hair loss normally does not affect the frontal hairline in women as it does in men, thinning over the front and top of the scalp is typical and can be devastating to a woman’s self-esteem.
The effect of increased levels of DHT in women is noticeably different than it is in men. Women tend to suffer from general thinning of the hair as they age. This is driven by a combination of rising levels of DHT as well as decreasing levels of estrogen brought on by menopause. DHT appears to cause follicles to enter the resting phase faster and this shedding continues at a quicker rate, causing the “new” hair to become finer and ultimately leading to the follicles shutting down and becoming dormant.

People with these types of hair loss should consult a physician immediately.
Q. What is the primary cause of age-related hair loss?
A. One of the primary causes of age-related hair loss in men is the rising level and/or sensitivities to the “bad” form of testosterone DHT (dihydrotestosterone). In postmenopausal women, the decline in estrogen is thought to contribute to hair thinning.
Q. What is the most common type of hair loss in men?
A. One of the most common types of hair loss in men is male pattern baldness (MPB), a systematic loss of hair that includes a receding hairline and expanding “bald” spot on the top of the head. This eventually leads to a horse-shoe- like pattern of remaining hair that is mostly unaffected by DHT.
Q. What is the most common type of hair loss in women?
A. One of the most common types of hair loss in women is female pattern thinning (FPT). With age, the hair tends to “thin out” in generalized areas such as the sides of the head. This type of FPT affects more women as they pass through the stages of menopause.
Q. What choices do women have when battling hair loss?
A. With NuHAIR products, women now have a choice in their battle against age-related hair loss. Many formulas on the market have unwanted side effects. Multi-vitamins for hair are relatively popular but do little to help counteract the actual cause of hair loss. NuHAIR is the natural, effective alternative for women.*
Q. How quickly will I see results?
A. We strongly recommend that NuHAIR products be used as directed for at least 3-4 months for maximum results. The average user will tend to see a slowing of hair loss during the first 1-2 months, with additional hair growth after 3-4 months.
Q. What happens if I stop taking NuHAIR?
A. Since the ingredients in NuHAIR are designed to “block” the negative effects of DHT, you should continue to take the product on an ongoing basis to maximize the positive effects.
