There are some things that have been staples in bodybuilders' diets for decades: eating a huge steak for dinner, a 6+ egg omelet, gallons of milk. But one old-school food has disappeared from American diets: liver and organ meats. Liver is an abundant source of protein with an incredible amino acid profile; has a great amount of A and B vitamins; contains plenty of iron and folic acid; is the best source of copper in food; and even contains Co-Enzyme Q10 (CoQ10). But it has fallen out of favor in America due to its taste and negative connotations.
Enter Uni-Liver from Universal Nutrition (Find the best deals on 500 tablets here). Uni-Liver is the self-proclaimed old school supplement, and lives up to its claims with one of the best amino acid deals you'll find.
Each serving (2 tablets) contains 3.2g of protein. At $11.85 for 500 caps, you get 250 servings, which means that Uni-Liver provides over 67g of protein per dollar! If you haven't checked our protein section, that's the best deal on the site! We need more liver-based protein!
How do I take Uni-Liver?
It's simple. With every meal, just pop 3-4 Uni-Liver tabs. This will give you a 5-7g boost of protein, keep your blood and muscles enriched with its fantastic amino acid profile (see the amino acid profile section), and if you do this for 5 meals, it may be enough to get you over some of your smaller protein hurdles.
How does Uni-Liver taste?
There is a noticable smell to Uni-Liver. Sadly, it smells like dog food (or does dog food smell a lot like liver?). Either way, there is no taste as I find it easy to swallow and I never get any burps with this product.
What's with the Amino Acid Profile of Uni-Liver?
Take a look at Uni-Liver's Nutrition Label. For some reason, the Amino Acid Profile is per 100g of liver -- not per serving. I'm not sure why Universal chose to do it this way, but some simple calculations will get you on your way:
30 grain per serving. 1 gram = 15.4323584 grains. Each serving contains 30 / 15.4323584 = 1.943967 grams per serving, or 51.4412 servings per 100 grams.
So if there's 2000mg Arginine / 100g of Liver, there is then 2000mg / 51.4412 = 38.879mg arginine per serving of Uni-Liver.
Moral of the story: Divide the numbers they quote by 51.4412 and you'll get the amount of amino acids per serving.
Note that these are not free-form amino acids, so they will take some digestion time with your food to get into your bloodstream. This is why they're such a good deal and not a "post-workout supplement".
What's the rating for Uni-Liver?
Value: 5/5
Effectiveness: 5/5
Taste: N/A (good: That's a 5/5 for me!)
Overall: 5/5
