Side Effects of Omega 3 / Omega 6 Fatty Acids

Omega 3 fatty acids may cause:

• Bleeding with people who are susceptible to bleeding, take blood-thinners, or simply ingest far too much omega 3;
• Flatulence, bloating, belching, and diarrhea. Fishy burps are most common, and we recommend quality capsules that are kept in the freezer to prevent this;
• Individuals with type 2 diabetes may experience increases in fasting blood sugar levels while taking fish oil supplements and should only use fish oil supplements under the doctor's orders;
• The fish oils may contain mercury, dioxins, and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). (source)

• Interactions with other medications (consult a doctor if you currently take prescriptions);
• Issues with people with seizure disorders, especially with evening primrose oil;
• Harm to the fetus in pregnant women if the oil contains borage seed oil and possibly other sources of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA);
• Some omega-6 fatty acids, such as corn oil, promote the growth of prostate tumor cells. Do not use GLA if risk or symptoms of prostate cancer exist. (source)
